The first fully electric truck and trailer sets for cargo transport in the Americas are now in operation in Chile. This milestone results from a partnership between Randon, the largest trailer manufacturer in Latin America, and the Chilean mining company SQM. The company has delivered units from the exclusive Hybrid R line, equipped with the pioneering e-Sys auxiliary traction technology from Suspensys, for use in the transportation of minerals in Chile.
Among the innovations in this operation is the development of an electric tank trailer for transporting lithium brine, with a customized configuration for the complexity of the production process it is applied to. Another model already in operation is a dump trailer for transporting minerals, which has shown significant reductions in fuel consumption and component wear when combined with a diesel truck.
The delivery was officially marked at an event in the Chilean region of Antofagasta on December 20, with the presence of leaders from the companies involved in the project and local authorities. The partnership also includes the mediation of Epysa, Randon's distributor in Chile, and Nazar, the transport company that will operate the fully electric sets in the mining area.
SQM, one of the world leaders in lithium production and with the lowest carbon emissions in the market, acquired the electric equipment sets as part of its Sustainability Plan, committing to becoming carbon-neutral in all its business lines by 2040—specifically for lithium by 2030. The use of Randon trailers equipped with e-Sys technology allows the Chilean company to have some of the first fully electric cargo transport sets in the world, as the company already operates high-tonnage electric trucks in its fleet. With the use of Hybrid R models, the expected operational cost reduction for the client is significant.
"Another delivery that confirms the global transformation potential that this sustainable technology can offer for logistics and transportation. We believe that cooperation and the creation of disruptive solutions are the way forward for the evolution of electromobility. We are proud to be at the forefront of this journey, together with strategic partners to execute this challenge," says Randoncorp CEO, Sérgio L. Carvalho.
With an innovative and sustainable concept, the Hybrid R line features the exclusive e-Sys auxiliary electric traction system, which recovers energy generated during descents and braking, providing additional force for the traction of the set. This movement can generate up to 207 hp of additional power to assist with climbing and overtaking. Depending on the application, load condition, and the road traveled, fuel savings can reach up to 25%, contributing to less component wear, lower waste generation, and reduced emissions into the environment, with a significant impact on business competitiveness. The complete solution was pioneered by Randoncorp through a partnership between Randon, Suspensys, and the Randon Technology Center.
